This isn’t the first time I’ve cried for my community, my queer family, and it won’t be the last. It’s surreal being over a thousand miles away and watching this unfold in the place that I grew up in. I’m flying home tomorrow, maybe for selfish reasons. There’s been so much support pouring in, they don’t need me. But I need them. And I need to do whatever I can for them.
I think you’ve actually managed to infuse numbers with humanity…interesting and beautiful. Thank you.
Amen. And thank you. This is one of the most positive things I’ve read in this crazy aftermath*. Good to know there are other ways to see things.
Also, there was something repulsive about constantly hearing this referred to as “the greatest mass murder” in American history (like a new record to be broken) — words one might associate with a sporting event. I don’t blame the journalists for this; they’re just trying to do their jobs, but that we can only wrap our minds around such tragedies by using numbers and comparisons and impotent words… and then proceed on, business-as-usual, to do nothing, is indeed sickening.
The greatest mass shooting; obviously 9/11 killed more people. This is just the desire of the news media to make every event unique: “For the first time, a Weimaraner has given birth to half-chihuahua puppies!” Yeah, we get it, all dogs are the same species. Next!
NO, they are not just doing their jobs. They are trying to be more sensational than the next reporter. They have a choice not to report this way.
Thank you for your eloquence, humanity, and the reminder to keep widening the circles.
This was truly a beautiful Math With Bad Drawings. Who knew that a math blog could help us to embrace humanity.
50 victims kiled = tragedy
50 perpetrators shot = victory
I think it is a very big issue. As a human being we have to choose a side where we are, we have to pick the number, as a society member too, as gays or homophobe too. It is black or white, 49 or 50. Are we counting murderer as a victim of police or victim of another society…if he is a victim. The best question which was raised lately. Thank you
More beautiful words from a numbers guy. Thanks.
This is the most sane article I have read about the Orlando tragedy ….I began following your blog as for the first time in my life it helped me ‘get’ math ……..one of your previous posts described math as providing an undercurrent of order to what appears to be an overriding chaos ….this post also does that most eloquently ….Thankyou Ben:)
As the enemy becomes inhuman, so do we. We can’t allow ourselves to be forced into smaller circles by fear, or by fear mongering politicians. Thank you.
Good one, Ben, very apt. Love your blog. Cousin Marcie Frankel in Buffalo.

Damn. This is outstanding, Ben. I come to your blog for humor, but today I find it full of emptiness. Justified, valid emptiness. Thank you.
This is so beautifully written and expresses my hope of what is possible–cultivating tolerance and seeing the humanity of ALL beings, not just the ones to whom we are related or with whom we agree, but ALL beings. Thank you for pouring your self into this post, that we may all benefit from that effort.
Thank you so much for writing this.
Very well written! Posts like these should go viral to reinstate faith in people’s mind that good still exists. It exists within us, but we are busy looking for evil in other people’s minds.
