You need to read John C. Wright. “City Beyond Time” is a better short story collection than “I, Robot”, and it was published this past summer. You can get the ebook for five bucks off of Amazon, and you get the link immediately.
Absolutely brilliant. It’s the only Wright book I’ve ever read, but the man is clearly a master.

Oh, it has. Check out Vernor Vinge’s Fire Upon the Deep and its prequel and sequel, and also David Brin’s Uplift series.
The scifi of today cannot compete with the rich storytelling it had before.
Although, somewhat weirdly, dystopian young-adult novels are more popular than ever.
I’ll plug John C. Wright one more time in this thread, because “City Beyond Time” was seriously THAT good.
